Throughout his whole life his childhood in southern Chile influenced his poetry, the geographical background taking on thematic importance. I am there all alone and in my arithmetic notebook I write poems), he recalled in Obras completas (Complete Works, 1962).

Allí estoy solo y en mi cuaderno de aritmética escribo versos" (In one minute the night and the rain cover the world. "En un minuto la noche y la lluvia cubren el mundo. The Reyes home was modest, but the boy had some privacy for his voracious reading. As a child he revered his stepmother, a sweet and silent woman of peasant stock who was close to the earth that he wrote of continually as a poet. His father's remarriage to Doña Trinidad Candia Marverde (whom Neruda fondly recalled in his autobiographical poetry as la mamadre, "the momother") was a blessing for Reyes. At the age of sixteen Reyes was introduced to French poetry by the headmistress of Temuco's school for girls, Gabriela Mistral, a poet who in 1945 received the first Nobel Prize in literature awarded to a Latin American author. He grew up reading voraciously, as a lonely boy, in spite of the two siblings born of his father's second marriage, Laura and Rodolfo. He learned to read early and began to write timid verses, a point of contention with his father, who would not encourage his "daydreaming," and his schoolmates, who made fun of him. When he was two years old, his father moved to Temuco and lived there throughout the boy's adolescence, in a wooden house with a small garden. Reyes grew up surrounded by rainy forests and majestic mountains.

And no less strongly I think that all this is sustained - man and his shadow, man and his conduct, man and his poetry - by an ever-wider sense of community, by an effort which will for ever bring together the reality and the dreams in us because it is precisely in this way that poetry unites and mingles them.Born in Parral, a small town in southern central Chile, on 12 July 1904, Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto was the son of railroad engineer José del Carmen Reyes and elementary-school teacher Rosa Basoalto (who died of tuberculosis two months after the child came into the world). There are many small tributes to Neruda sprinkled in this simple poem: Neruda loved to write in green ink, he was famous for his love poems, and he was highly controversial, (hence the "virescent sound, mingled with crimson and lilac"), he also wrote a book of poems entitled, " The Book of Questions" and the ode format chosen for the poem is an homage to the poet who left indelible marks on the history of letters with his famous odes.Īnd I believe that poetry is an action, ephemeral or solemn, in which there enter as equal partners solitude and solidarity, emotion and action, the nearness to oneself, the nearness to mankind and to the secret manifestations of nature. Neruda was purported to die of cancer though suspicion shrouded the poet's legacy for years, it is now suspected that a second "doctor" by the name of Price was with Neruda in his final days and could be responsible for the poet's death. Pablo Neruda, Chilean poet whom Gabriel Garcia Marquez considers the greatest poet of the 20th century, is being exhumed forty years after his death.
